How to export your Character.AI chats and data
Request it today. Character.AI says an export takes about 3–4 weeks to prepare, and the download link is only valid for 7 days.
Before you start: reports indicate the export may not include the full definitions of characters you created. If you made characters, save their definitions first.
On the website
- Sign in and open your profile.
- Go to Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data.
- Choose Export Data and confirm.
In the mobile app
- Open Settings.
- Go to Legal & Privacy.
- Choose Export Data and confirm.
Menu names can change. If yours look different, follow Character.AI’s official help article.
What happens next
- You’ll get an email with a download link when the export is ready, usually after 3–4 weeks.
- The link expires after 7 days, so download the file as soon as it arrives.
- The download is a ZIP archive. Keep it somewhere safe and back it up, because it may be the only copy of your chat history.
What the export may not include
Based on reports from people who have exported their data, the archive contains your account details, a list of characters and your chat messages, but not the full character definitions (greeting, description and example dialogue). Save those yourself with the character saver while the site is up. We will update this guide once we have checked a real export.
